I am looking at a 1992 Timberwolf 2wd that has been sitting fr a while.
Seller said carb goofed up and they stopped riding it.
Selling for $250 as-is.

Fuel line is rotted and 2 tires are flat.
No racks, but plastic looks good. Seat is good.
No real rust.

My question is since it has NO pull start and the battery is shot, how can I tell if the motor is seized?

I tried to pull up on the shifter to get it into gear to make sure the engine has compression....but it only 'clicks' once and still doesn't seem like it is in gear.
Feels like it is in neutral.
Pulling up on the shifter only clicks once. Then pulling up more times doesn't do anything.
Pushing down will also lick once (assuming it is in neutral).

Any reason why it would only click once?
Any reason why that first click would not put it into 1st gear?

Engine has oil. Have not checked shaft and gear fluid yet.

Seller just found the key and I plan to go back tomorrow after work to see if i can jump the started off of my truck to make sure the engine isn't locked up.

Any other suggestions?

I'm not used to an ATV without a pull start too.
Also - never had a Yamaha and not sure if there is something normal about not being able to run thru the gears with engine off.

All help appreciated !!!

Thanks

I'm going to take another look at this thing after work.

I also remembered that there is a broken bolt that is supposed tohold the reverse linkage to the gear box.
So - I'm guessing that the tranny is stuck between forward and reverse.
read last night that this would make it seem to be in neutral all the time.
Would probably also clear up why it only clicks once - since there is only 1 reverse gear.
I'll take an adjustable wrench and see if I can move it to forward gear location and test compression.

Any advice appreciated !!

thanks in advance.

Picked up the 92 Timberwolf last night.
Had to pick up a battery too.
Hooked it up and nothing.
No lights, start, etc.
Checked the fuse near the battery (it has a 10A in it). Looked good.

Suggestions on where to start?

Downloaded the FSSM, will see if I can decipher it.

All help appreciated.

Swapped the 10A fuse with another one...and I get neutral light.
Starter turns over.
Pulled the carb to order kit and checked air filter.
Air filter looks new.
Put some fresh gas in it and put on a new fuel line. Inline filter looks ok.
There was absolutely no gas in the tank. No water that i can see/hear.

Not getting spark at the plug now.

Also no lights. Previous owner put on some aftermarket fog lights on the front rack area.

Now - if i can just get spark and a carb kit.

ok - still no spark....because the kill switch was off.
Turned to Run, hit the start button and POP. Everything went black.
No Neutral, to start.
Fuse still checks with continuity (both the new fuse and old one - both are 10A).

Is there another circuit breaker/fuse?
Should the fuse be bigger?

Well....it APPEARED that the key switch was fried.
I jumpered across it and the started turned over and neutral light is working.
Put the switch BACK on and low-and-behold the key switch is working again. bad connection I guess.
I have spark too.....big relief.

So - waiting on carb kit.
Bolt is broken off in the reverse 'linkage bracket' in the middle gear box.
Crb is soaking in petro and all bolts are soaking in PB Blaster.
Wish me luck.

The 10 amp fuse is right for this atv. Have you taken a look at wolf's carb cleaning 101 thread if not you may want to check it out.

10 AMP?
I keep seeing 30A in the FSM.

I have both, so swapping it out is fine with me.

I'll definitely look at Wolf's cleaning info ! Thanks.

Also -

After some additional digging last night, and intermittent key switch issues (working/not working)....I found that the main battery ground wire isn't very well grounded to the frame.

I'll replace that connection after work and see if  get consistent results.

I looked at yamahapartshouse.com & yamahapartsnation.com and the only fuse listed is the 10A for a 92 Timberwolf 2wd.

Put the carb kit in today.
NO instructions included.
Not starting.
Doesn't seem to be 'pulling gas from tank'.
Any suggestions?
Plug is not wet at all.
Got spark.

Put the e-lip on the 4th groove from the top.
Put the pilot at 1.5 turns back from seated.

No clue how to measure float.
Will search web after while for that.

thx

I see the 10A fuse now.
The FSM I have has several years in it.
The 30A is for a newer Timberwolf.

I am still having carb issues.
No fuel getting to motor.
Carb doesn't seem to be 'pullin' fuel from tank.
petcock is working fine.
Going to try to reset float level after work.

All suggestions appreciated.

If you loosen the carb bowl drain screw is fuel coming out of the drain line?

I broke down and took the carb to a cycle mechanic Friday. He tore the kit back out of it and put it in his cleaner. He reinstalled and setup the carb (off of the bike). I installed and found water in the gas I refilled with. Drained tank and bowl and tested. Only runs with choke on. I took the whole atv back to him. He is willing to tear the carb back apart if needed but wants me to do some things first.

I put on a new spark plug boot. (he said the spark looked a little weak)
Ordered exhaust gasket.
Check compression(has 120+ lb)
Will have to check/adjust valves.

The thing just won't idle.
Can't find any apparent vacuum leak.
It only runs with the choke on at least half and with that it is at a high rpm and has a slight miss.

Guess I'll try to check or adjust valves this week.

Suggestions?

Just my .02 but if it will only run with the choke on then there is still a fuel delivery problem or the carb is maladjusted.
