without pulling the air filter off and squirting some fuel into the carb with a syringe. So my question; Is this a carb problem (blocked jets/dirty gummed up) or a choke problem. Once started the thing runs good and will start right up again. I just bough this machine this week so I don't know it's history.

Well, I pulled the carb off. Everything inside is clean. I went ahead a cleaned everything anyway just to make sure.

did you nspect the floats for cracks or wear?
also check the color on the spark plugs' electrode.
if it is running too lean it may do this.
gray or white on the spark plug and it's running too lean.
could have the wrong pilot jet.
also did you use a .10 guitar string or a wire bread tie to run through the jets when you cleaned it?

The floats looked good. The electrode has a white ring right along the outside edge. I did not use a wire. But I pulled the jets out, held them up to a white background and could see through them. I went ahead and shot some cleaner through them anyway. Being over 40 sucks because I could not read the stamp on the side of the jet.
