POLARIS SPORT 400 LOSING SPARK

OK here goes. I have a 99 sport 400. It will start on first or second pull every time cold.(starter is not installed) The quad runs great. The problem is when i shut it down after riding it wont fire up while its still hot. I checked the spark after a good ride and its extremly intermittent. When it sits for awhile it will fire right up. I dont think this matters(icould be wrong) but it does not have a battery or starter. Also the reverse limiter button is inop. I was told it needs a battery for this to function. Any help would be great.

try getting it warmed up and the next time it refuses to start while hot carefully pour some cool water on the cdi to cool it down. if it starts right up then you know your cdi is overheating and it's time to replace it.
some of the polaris machines have a recall for the cdi overheating.
also with the starter removed it means water and dirt can get into the stator and magneto causing it to have a weak or no spark.

I made a little plate the same shape as the starter and with a thin layer of silicone it should seal fine until i get a starter installed. I will give the cdi a good cool down next time i take it for a ride. Thanks for the tip.

good deal, but the polaris atv's are designed as well to allow water and dirt to enter the stator housing. though not as badly as if the starter hole was left open....
