I'm new to this forum and need some help with my 2003 Honda Recon rear brake.  I bought this ATV used and am checking to see what shape the rear brake shoes are in.  I have the drum and actuator plate off the axle.  My problem is that I can't separate the drum from the acuator plate.  Can anybody tell me how this is done with out breaking anything?  Thanks for your help.

on some models there is a large snap ring. (big round piece of metal)

on others it's a matter of getting the brake shoes adjusted back down to stock to remove them.
sometimes as they wear the previous owner adjusts the wheel cylinder mounted adjusters until finally they wont realease the drum without adjusting them in.

i posted a link to some free service manual downloads on this site.  check it out and see if your service manual is listed.
this will tell you which method and show you how to remove them.
