Chinese ATV 110cc Cranking Problem

I have a brand new 110cc Chinese four wheeler that was cranking fine. I had a small 2 amp charger hooked up to the battery making sure it was fully charged because I was getting ready to sell it. The battery is fine like I said I only had the charger on it to make sure the battery was hot for the guy buying it. I started to crank the four wheeler and it cranked and died due to just being cold. I was playing around with the choke and had cranked it a few times to get it warm when all of a sudden it would do nothing. The solenoid is clicking. I checked the fuse and wires  and everything looks good. The battery is showing 12.5v without the charger. It is throwing me off because the solenoid will not jump like I have done with these atvs many times before. I lock down the handlebar, turn the key on, and put the screwdriver across the post and I get no spark and the atv does not try to crank. But the solenoid does click when you try to crank it normally. Any ideas??? Thanks, Jonathan

Use a meter and measure the DC voltage to ground right at the starter motor terminal while trying to start the quad (i.e. the solenoid is "clicked" in).

If you read really low voltage then you have a bad battery or a bad connection between the battery and the starter (including ground returns).  You can differentiate between the battery and bad connections by measuring the voltage right on the battery terminals while trying to start the quad (solenoid "clicked"), or you could just jump your quad battery to your car.

If you read 12 volts at the starter motor input terminal (while solenoid is "clicked") then the problem is inside the starter.  I've never taken a 110cc starter apart, but I've been able to fix 150cc starters by repairing obvious defects inside (grunged up brush holders, and broken brush flex cables, etc.).  I think it is worth a try to look inside for simple problems.  Or you can just buy a new starter.

Okay, I will try that and see how it goes. Thanks, Jonathan
