Is my Kodiak shifting right?

I just bartered for a 2001 Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4, my first ATV.  What is it supposed to sound or feel like when it shifts through the gears?  When I accelerate I don't notice any RPM adjustments, and I don't want to wind the thing out if it's stuck in a low gear.  Thanks!
