92 350l coolant in cylinder

my buddy has a 92 350l 4x4 that started burning coolant.pulled the top end off and saw normal wear.took cylinder and head to the machine shop had it all cleaned and checked and cant find a reason for the coolant in the cylinder wich had filled part of the lower end of the case.made a few calls and came across a dealer mechanic who said if the seals in the back of the water pump fail coolant will get straight into the lower end.has anyone had this problem or heard of it before?thanks from a puzzled atver.

found the problem.the water pump seals leaked and someone had filled the weep hole with silicone.not knowing there was a problem it got run until coolant had ruined all of the engines bottom end and everything under the right side cover.  oops!thanks to all who read this post and if anyone knows where to find a good engine my buddy is looking for one.thanks
