I have a 96 yamaha blaster, I recently had a shop pretty much rebuild the engine and bore it 50 over. Upon hooking it all back onto the blaster, I got it started and it sat at idle for about 10 minutes, I then put it into first gear to ride, I got about five seconds into riding and it stalled, started it back up got into first gear and took off..same thing. It did pop twice upon trying to restart, but now I am finding I have spark sometimes and sometimes I do not have spark. I replaced the coil and still have spark sometimes and sometimes I do not.. it is a brand new plug, plug is fine. Can anyone please try to help me out? This is our first four wheeler and my wife only got two weeks on it before we had to rebuild it. I do not have an electric start and kicking it all day is starting to make the foot a little sore! Thanks in advance!

a few questions...

did you readjust the fuel mixture after boring .50 over?
if so you should. the compression is higher so the fuel mixture will be lean if you don't.

try turning the fuel/air mixture screw to the left 1/4-1/2 turn.

see if it gets better or worse. if worse then chances are you need to disable the over-rev switches on it.
there is one on the tors unit (box on top of the carb) one in the thumb throttle, and a box under the hood depending on which year.  88-2002 it has the module under the hood, 2003-2006 it is made into the cdi box.

just unplug the thumb throttle and tors unit.

also check to make sure the jets aren't clogged in the carb.

Thank you, yes I have mixed the gas/oil as the shop had said to .. just over 32:1 so it would run a little rich for the first tank. I also tried turning the fuel/air mixture..nothing. I am not even able to start it at this point, theres just no spark.. The carb was gone through also, I have an ohm meter to test the stator but I am unsure what the numbers should read on it. When I test it I am getting a read off of the white wire/red line, yellow wire/red line (hooked together for read) and I am not getting a read at all off of the black wire/red line and black wire (hooked together for read)... Possibly the stator??? I'm unsure if I am looking in the right area at this point.. countless hours trying to figure it out after lots of money for rebuild and time waiting to get it running again..I thank you for your reply, I happen to live in Michigan, so that won't work out! Any ideas ?? thanks

will have to lok up the meter checks for the stator, meanwhile test the coil. put one lead in the spark plug cap, and the other on the wire coming out of the back, you should get a reading of between 13 and 15 ohms.

The manual said to pull the cap off of the wire to get a read and I didn't get any reading, but I pulled the cap off of a different quad that runs fine and checked to see if I would get a reading off of that one and I didn't get a read off that one either..but I bought a brand new coil and put that on there, figuring that was what it was, but still nothing.. thanks again..I appreciate you taking your time to try and help!

Please let me know if you find the readings for the stator or can think of anything else, I have looked all over and can not find them. Thanks

Vaguely from memory, will try to remember to check the numbers.

on the stator, set the meter on 2000

Check the resistance with an ohm meter. One coil should read around 1100 ohms and the other one should read around 500 ohms

O you gotta hear this one!!

So I had my wife take the stator into the shop and have them test it for me, only costing 10 bucks I didn't have anything to lose! So she takes it in and the guy tests it and says the coil on it is bad, said they had one for 20 bucks. So she purchased it and I had her ask him how much to change it..he said he would check with his boss, comes back within about three minutes and says "o its not bad after all, I swaped it out with the new one and the old one isn't bad.." so I had her go pick up the 90.00 cdi box and put that on, its gotta be that! So I put it on and wala..nothing!!! still nothing! So she found a friend who knows a friend who has an ohm meter to test the coil, he tested it and said that coil is BAD..so back to square one, I will be purchasing that coil (again since she had returned it) and see if it works afterall, and if it does... o boy is that shop going to get an ear full, I think the guy just didn't want to change it and decided to say it was good afterall! hmmm.. I will be putting the new coil on the stator tomorrow and will let you know and anyone else who might be having this problem how it turns out.. Thanks again!

Thanks, but nah..didn't work afterall, I am however getting the read I was suppose to get with the new one, unlike the bad read from the old one, but still no spark..still won't run..

so I have re-read the manual over and over again and here I wasn't testing the right wire in the first place.. there is a yellow/red wire on the stator that the manual doesn't say to test at all and here I was testing that one with the others, so .. when tested correctly.. hmm.. well I am not getting any read on the charging coil on the stator..so I am guessing this might be the next part to get and see if that will work.. I'll be sure to let you know, meanwhile if you can think of anything else feel free to step on in! thanks

ok.. the blaster is still sittin there .. ya know.. just collecting some dust!! ugh!

So we still haven't figured it out yet .. I have gone through all the wires, nothing.. I have gone through just about everything I can think of ... I just don't get it ... why all of a sudden no spark?? Anything I have done has not changed a thing on it ... I have no idea where to go now ...... for 70.00 an hour .. I guess I'll keep trying, any new suggestions?

try taking the cover off of the magneto and cleaning up the inside with some sand paper.  itll be a magnet system in there.  scratch the wheel up and try it.  if its only getting spark sometimes it could be a rusty magneto.

also check to see if ur spark plug wire is damaged.  if its damaged it can ark out on the frame and u wont get spark.
