This is my first post, hi everybody.  I bought a used 2000 Kodiak 400 a couple of months ago and it was running fine until a week ago.  I couldn't get it to start, so I bought a new battery and spark plug.  I checked the gas line and checked for spark.  So today I decided to take a look at the air filter.  I took off the cover, and the box was 1/4 full of gas.  Not good obviously.  I cleaned out all the gas, and without putting the filter back in or the cover on, I cranked it and it started right up.  Then, the hose that attached to the box cover (about the size of my pinkie) started spraying gas into the box.  What is going on? Can anyone help?
Thanks!!

The float in the carb may be stuck allowing fuel to go everywhere. Is it fouling out the spark plug?

If that is indeed the problem. I would also check the crankcase for gas, if so change the oil. If the gas is left in with the oil, the oil will be thin. It has the potential to cause engine damage.

I am working on it now.  When I took off the oil cap, it is full to the rim with gas.  I will have to change it for sure.  I am cleaning the carb right now, hope that does it. I don't see any obvious bad parts but I have never tore into a carb before, so I am crossing my fingers.

Get as much gas out as possible. If the float needle doesn't look good then I suggest picking up a rebuild kit. Clean the carb. the best you possibly can.

Hello,
I had the same issue and I bought a rebuild kit for the carb. Drained all of the oil/gas out of the crankcase, changed the plug. Fired right up now it starts to cut out from 3/4 to full throttle. If I restrict the airflow into the box by putting a dishtowel over it it winds right up. Any suggestions? I have adjusted the brass screw as suggested that is in front of the bowl all the way in all the way out and everywhere in between with the same results.

Thank you.

sounds like the main jet, you need more fuel. Check out the carb 101 in this forum.

I agree with Micheal. Is the main jet in the rebuild kit the same size as the one that was already on the carb.?
You may be able to compensate by moving the needle jet up to richen the mixture.
