I bought a 2008 CanAm 400 Outlander Xt and took it on the trails twice so far and both times after 2-3 hours a loud whining noise starts. Both times I've brought it in for repair, and both times they can't find anything wrong with it. It sounds like an alarm, but I've been told there aren't any alarms. Once the noise starts, it stays on. The second time, I turned it off and it did it a couple of times with the engine off. Any ideas? Thanks!

could just be the fan kicking in to cool the engine?

No, not the fan, sounds like it's coming farther back under the engine. The repair shop called today, they can't find anything wrong with it. They let it run for quite a while and rode it, but it didn't make the noise. They said it's documented that I brought it in for a problem they can't diagnose and if something breaks- it will be covered. But they didn't say anything about coming to pick me up on trail! Thank you for your feedback.

I have an early Outlander and it had a charging regulator problem (old recall) that after a period of time allowed the charging system to overcharge the battery. The squealling noise was the battery overpressurizing and the pressure blowing by the battery caps. It was kind of scary to see a bulging battery back there. Replacing the regulator fixed the problem.
