i just got this four wheeler for free, and know that the kid has been riding it around the block for a while, but sat for maybe 2 weeks at most,  now his parents gave it to mem and i cant get it to start.   they told me that he's been using the pull starter, but i still can't get it.   i drained all the gas out of the carb and tank, put new gas in it and nothing still.
could it be that it's just really hard to pull start a cold engine?
what would you do?(without getting rid of it)

If I got it for free, I would fix it. Now if it cost more to fix it then it's worth,I would part it out.

Do you have a spark?

i do have a good spark.  the poeple that gave it to me, are good friends of mine, but he's always gone off for work.  he told me that the bearing in axle were shot, it took it apart and they were worn,  the pinion won't meet good with the ring gear.  i was thinkin maybe just cause it was a cold motor, that it was hard to start it with pull cord.  he also said the starter was shot, so i can't electric start it.

Are you getting fuel to the plug? Try cranking it a few times then pull the plug and see if it's wet or dry.

Have you checked the starter to see if the brushes are worn out?

ok, i cleaned off plug, put back and pulled about 7 times.  i'm not totally sure but i believe it is wet.  could  there be a compression problem?  or should i just try to get the starter fixed, then try to start the motor again?

Try putting a teaspoon full of gas into the cylider, reinstall spark plug and then crank it. If it tries to start up, then you have a fuel problem. If it doesn't try to start and you have a good spark. I would then check the compression.
I wouldn't worry about the starter at this point.

Unfortunately stuff happens. My bro-in-law bought a Yamaha atv today for $45 that supposedly ran great a month ago. Well not anymore, we did find out it has fuel delivery problems. Going to tackle that tomorrow.
I sent you a pm.

ok, i managed to get it started today, after lots of pulling and messing with throttle while pulling.  i'm so wore out now.  it just started for a little bit, then when i let off throttle it dies, no matter what.  the pull cord is so short i now believe that had a big part of it, just didn't think about it before.  it probably does need new rings though also.  when/if i do replace rings is there anything else i should replace just while i have it apart?
