Hey Gang......

I'm having a no start/weak spark problem with a 1988 Suzuki LT-4WD.  This past winter it sat at the local repair shop for 10 weeks waiting for parts and a rebuilt stator.  I had already replaced many other parts including the coil.  When I took the bike in, they insisted on checking the wiring first, and said it was fine.  So, a rebuilt stator was installed including quite a few gaskets.  The bill was almost $800 which included 4 new tires.  I plowed my driveway about 5 times, and brought firewood to my deck probably 5 times.  It ran like a top!  Then, about 3 weeks ago, it wouldn't start again.  I checked, again, it had NO SPARK!  UGH!  I borrowed a truck and had to push it to load it.  When I got to the repair shop, it started right up.  Today, they called and said they cannot get it to start and wanted to see what I wanted to do.  He said the bill was already up to $179!!!!! But I already paid for that testing of the wires the first time, didn't I??!  Obviously, I paid for a rebuild on the stator and gaskets too for no reason.  It must have been fine, and the problem is in the wiring somewhere.   How come they can't find it?

I've got so much invested in this ATV now, that I have to keep going, but I'll have to find the problem myself.  I'll get the bike back home soon.  I hope I can talk them out of this last $179 charge, seeing how I already paid for the wiring check.

(This ATV has never been abused, and I have owned it since it was brand new.  It is in excellent condition, except for the electrical problem.)

Can anyone shed some light on this no spark condition?

Thanks,
Jackie

I cannot believe that no one has had this problem and found a fix for it.  Can someone at least tell me where to start looking for the problem?  Cou7ld it be the ignition switch, kill switch, a bad ground?

Doesn't anyone have an idea where I should start looking?  Geeeeeeeze!

I had the same problem and took a long time to find out that my CDI was bad.  If you look where the wires come out of the unit, see if there is a gap in the soft black plastic. I put on a new cdi unit myself, cost around $200 but was still less than a payment on a new one.  I too have had mine since new and always been garaged.

Thanks for your post, dryhmr!

I picked up the quad at the shop yesterday.  I got them to take at least 1 hours labor off the bill for their petty BS.  Can you imagine checking for water in the gas when the issue is NO SPARK?  IDIOTS!  Anyway, they did check the CDI and it was fine.  They are saying the problem is in the wiring.  Why they didn't see that the 1st time it was in there for the same problem is beyond me.  Obviously it didn't need a new stator if it was a wiring problem all along.  I hate "stealerships!"  Counting this bill, I almost have $650 for repairs on this machine..... and it still has no spark!  Guess it's an expensive lawn ornament, huh?
