Polaris Sportsman 500 HO - potential buyer

I'm new to this forum but came across it doing research on the Polaris Sportsman 500 HO.  I want an ATV that's not too expensive, 4x4, has IRS, and good clearance for going off trail.  I also wanted to buy American, so the Polaris was my first choice.

I already knew about their recalls and also found this link about their settlement with CPSC for not notifying them of defects - http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml05/05086.html.  That's a huge red flag.  Can I trust you Polaris?  I don't really want to gamble my money on something as expensive as an ATV.

I started looking at different companies like Can Am, Yamaha, and Honda.  I like the Can Am's but they're a little expensive and I read about a problem with their frame's being weak.  Then there's the Yamaha Wolverine and Grizzly, and Honda's Rancher.

The Wolverine is nice but it doesn't have IRS.  Same thing on the Ranchers.  How important is the IRS vs. Single?  I want to be able to drive through rough forest.  There are a lot of down trees and cypress knees, so I'm thinking the IRS is better for the clearance.  Any thoughts wolf1?

Yamaha is a brand I trust, so I'm leaning more towards the Wolverine and Grizzly.  It seems like too much of a gamble to go with Polaris.

Hi Twitch.
Here is my two-cents, for whatever it is worth to you.  We own two Polaris Sportsmans, 2005 and 2006, 700EFI twins. BOTH have been absolute lemons since day one, with one problem after another.  I have had so many problems with them that I am loosing count and even while under warranty we got no satisfaction, only incompetence, from dealer/service. I do not have any experiece with any other model, but I can not fathom a belief that their quality could be worse than Polaris. I am so angry with Polaris that I have vowed to scream about it from the mountain tops ever chance I get.  If I can disuade anyone from ever purchasing one of their product then at least I can get satisfaction from that.  My warning to you is to go for any other manufacturer, except Polaris.
