Hi I have a 1986 honda 350 fourtrax and to get it into reverse there is a button on the left handbrake, you push it down while pulling back on the brake at the same time. Once you do that you shift the gearshift up and its in reverse. Hope this helps.

80's and 90's fourtrax, you press the button on the left brake lever on top, then pull the brake lever, and reverse is all the way down.
the gears from bottom to top should be R N SL 1 2 3 4
