please help with trany issue

ok here it goes i have a 94 polaris i recently cracked gear case took it apart found another trany on ebay all i wanted was the cover the kid said it had no reverse which was no bid deal beacuse mine was working fine it had issues of comming out of reverse occasionally but nothing major any way took it apart today took the guts of my trany in to the case and now my reverse is not working do you think it could be the hi rev engage dog or something different goes forward the shift forks i used where mine and the dogs looked ok even on the one i pulled the guts out of he said had no reverse everything looked ok but there were a ton of shavings please help i dont want to take it apart again if it needs parts i will wait till i get them .
