my 230 doesnt seem to want to idle. it has been backfiring alot and it revs down really slow when you give it gas in neutral. i think the throttle cable might be catching somewhere in the covering. would that cause the whole thing to run like crap and back fire? when i try to make it idle it either idles low and kills or revs way high. i have tried screwing with the idle screw and fuel air screw in almost every way possible. i even tried loosening and tightening the cable itself. still wont run right.

no it sounds like a clogged jet or the fuel/air mixture is off,  check out the carburetor cleaning 101 post under atv repair and maintenance.  and the jetting 101 post
