I have a 88 250x that is completely stock. Even the tires are stock. I want to get as much power as i can without shortening the life of the machine. I am on a tight budget and would like not to spend alot of money. I ride mainly in trails, but also like to go fast.

check to see if a slotted stator plate is offered, that way you could possibly advance the timing 4 degree's or maybe even a 4 degree flywheel key.
look to see if "profire" makes a hotter coil for it.
you could also go with a larger rear sprocket for more low end torque or a smaller rear sprocket to make more top end.

the stator plate is under the flywheel/magneto.
a slotted stator plate allows you to advance or retard the timing for more horsepower.
