Heres a good on for everyone. My quad runs great in the garage, but out on the trail it will run perfect when you are driving it but if you shut it off or let it idle, it will shut off and not refire. It cranks over but not start. Once I get it home and leave it for a day it will fire up and run great again. I've replaced the coil and the fuel line. I've stripped off all the plastic and ran the hose over it to rule out a water issue. the only way i can tell that its going to screw up is the electric fan stops working. Its now been suggested that the ECM controls the spark and the elecrtic fan and to try to replace it next. When this problem has come up before and I got it to a dealer before it starts running again, there are no codes that show up in the ECM. What does everyone else think? Should I go ahead and try the ECM next or is it time to go to Can-Am?

could be an overheating issue, if so the ecm probably wont show a code. as the temperature sensor will be working properly.

The temp sensor is probably working properly because the fan will come on and off when its running but I can tell when its going to act up because the fan will quit working. It is the ECM that triggers the fan to coe on isn't it? Also, I don't get any over heating lights on the console and the machine doesn't seem hot when it does act up.

Something simple to try! Either run it with no gas tank cap or clean out the gas tank vent! This is a common problem when it runs fine for a while then quits let it sit and it runs fine for a while. What is happening it as you run you remove fuel from the tank hence creating a vacuum if there is no vent. As soon as the vacuum builds up to the point of not being displaced by air no more gas will come out! Let it sit and the vacuum bleeds off and the engine will run.
You can test this theory out by running it until it stops then just remove the gas cap, you will hear a rush of air entering the tank, then replace the cap and start it up!
You will kick youself if this is all it is and you spend $400 on the ECU.

could be the ecm, i have seen cases where the ecm gets hot and once you shut it down it wont restart til the ecm cools.
i would definately check that next.
