This is my 1st post over here, and I'm looking for some mechanical advice.

The swing arm bearing disintegrated on my quad, and I bought a replacement carrier off of eBay.

My question is this; is the rear axle 1 solid piece and does it matter much which way it comes out? I'm thinking that I need to hammer it (block of wood) from the sprocket side to drive it out. When I go to re-install it is there any thing that would make it easier on the bearings, other than greasing them and the axle shaft up?

I plan on re-using the bearings that came in the housing, they look alright, or do I need to pony up the money for new ones, and have a shop press the old ones out, and press in the new ones? I'm on a budget, and I can't really afford to pay anyone else to do this right now.

Thanks for your Time,
Gary

I would say you are on the right track to take out the rear axle.  It should come out either way.  As for the bearings maybe use high heat greese.  Also, I would probably replace the bearings if you are going to do all this work to replace the carrier.  If you know the size of the bearings you could check a local Equipment Parts dealer to see if they have them.  Or you could go the eBay way.  Using the shop press is the best way to put the new ones in.  I am assuming you are pressing in the new carrier with the bearings.  Just make sure it goes in evenly.

Hopefuly you will receive another post that helps as well.

Good luck.

Hey Gary,
welcome to the forum

here's the catch, if you use the bearings in the axle carrier you purchased, then you are using old bearings that you don't really know anything about the reliability of.

they could have been abused and ready to go out as well, afterall no one will tell you they abused it if they want you to buy the axle carrier.

i would pay for new bearings, and try to get better than stock,  "allballs" makes better than stock bearing kit that are really affordable.

WWW.RJATV.COM has great prices on allballs bearing kits and fast shipping.

the axle is a one piece, and will come out either left or right side. it varies with some models.

the old bearings can be removed yourself, using a hammer and a block of wood.

and in some cases a hammer and punch or drift pin.

carefully of course.

once you have the old bearings out you can install the new bearings as well the same way.

usually to put the bearings in you can use a flat piece of wood and lay it across the bearing flat side down and carefully hammer the wood to drive the new bearings in without damaging them.
Keep it RUBBER SIDE DOWN!!
