1998 trail blazer goes in reverse but wont go int gear forward

all that happens is you hear it click into forward then it just knocks and wont move give it a little gas and it knock faster what could it be i am not worried about taking it aprt but i dont own it yet a fried wants to sell it to me for 550 i thaught it would be perfect for my wife to ride on because she cant do a clutch or shift

Shift lever rod might need adjusting (not fully engaging) or something broke in the transmission (shift fork,drive belt/chain).
