I pulled a 1986 185 bayou out of the weeds at my buddys house slapped a new battery in it some new gas and it fired right up. It runs great for about 3-4 minutes then it dies. I turn the key off and on a couple times and choke it and it fires right up. Then in a couple minutes it dies again. I pulled the line off the fuel pump and it pumps gas fine. Any body else run across this?
Thanks.

check the tank for water, also check the floats for cracks or holes.

it is fairly common for this to happen, especially with atv's that sit for a while with gas in them.

if the float has a crack or hole it will fill with fuel and and weigh down so that it overloads on fuel.

also check the pilot jet, you can use a wire bread tie (with the plastic coating melted off) to run through the jets to clean them out.

also check the intake boot and air filter boot for cracks or holes.

as these will cause air leaks and issues with the fuel/air mixture

I put on a new fuel pump and a new boot. I cleaned the carb and changed the fuel lines and filter and it still runs for awhile then dies. the only other thing I can find is where the exhaust pipe meet the muffler it is very loose and exhausts through the gaps. Could that be messing up the back pressure and stalling out the motor momentarily?
