I am a brand newbie here, my husband has replaced 3 starters w/ dbl gear on a Loncin rtm250. Put new one in yesterday and of course today when it was pulled apart it had the same exact thing,  gears on new starter are now stripped.  we counted the teeth on the dbl gears and they matched the gears on the starter..........any ideas as to what could be causing this problem..........please help, i have been on this puter for 5 hours looking up diagrams and such. thanks so much for your help

the gears could be just a little too far apart, in that case, the answer would be finding one that is made a little further away.

are the teeth of the gears wearing out on the end, or the middle?

if in the middle put an extra gasket between the starter and the case.

this eliminate it hitting where the shaft slightly tapers.

husband says it does not have a bendix it just keeps stripping the tip of the starter (approximately 1/4 inch). Do you think timing issues could cause this problem? or do you think it could be the starter clutch?

this is an easy one to diagnose, yes it's the starter clutch thats messed up.

one more thing i almost forgot to mention, they make two differant starters for the 250 with the manual transmision, they mount the same, look the same, but they rotate in opposite directions, make sure you have installed the correct starter for your engine because the starter clutch is made to work in one direction only

bill is right, with it hitting the tip most likely it is the starter clutch.

starter seems to work fine, until you shut the bike off, then it kicks back and strips teeth off of starter do you still think its the clutch?

Hey, we found the problem, for all of those that may have the same problem, we had to put shims under the two bolts in the rear of the starter (small shims) because the starter gear wasn't meshing up to the primary gear.  Two small washers under rear of starter fixed the problem.  Thanks to all for your help.
