My 86 Honda TRX200sx has been quite dependable, fires first touch of the start switch, but at times it just turns over and over and over, then must "heal its self" and starts right up.  Yesterday this happened and I took out the plug, grounded, and super weak spark.  Don't think it is something major like stator cause it has run great for about a year.  Coil, might be but doubt it.  Read somewhere that the key switch is a common problem.  One guy said he had weak spark, disconnected all wires from the key and used the pull rope and had hot spark?????  Did all the obvious things, new gas, checked main fuse, new plug, getting gas, hot battery.  Am going to check out my key switch today, but thought someone might give me a for sure fix from past experience.

have you checked the stator contacts and the magneto for rust?

over time they can build up surface rust from moisture in the air or going through puddles.

it's makes for a weak spark.

usually you can use some fine sandpaper on it to remove the rust and it's back to trails!

Have not but the ATV was running 3 days ago, still rec. I try this.  Here is a question, took apart the switch on the left side handle bars, the one with the Off/Run switch.  When apart, with the key ON and the switch in the RUN position I probed with test light and both sides of the switch were dead (orange wire and black w/white stripe).  Probed with key on and switch in the Off position and both sides were dead.  Even tried probing while I turned the motor over and still dead.  Is this normal?  Gotta be a hot wire somewhere so when you put the switch to OFF it kills the engine.  Orange wire goes to rectifier in the rear and the black w/white stripe goes to a black box up front way above the front skid plate.  Any input?

you need to check it for continuity, as it is a circuit breaker.

make sure continuity is getting across from wire to wire.

if not then the switch is most definately bad.

Looked at switch again, cleaned the copper contacts and reassembled it.  With key on, switch to run, no spark.  Made a jumper wire and jumped from one side of the switch (black w/white stripe) to the other which is a green wire, which in effect would act as if the switch were in the RUN position.  NO SPARK.  Tested the coil and it tested good.  Think it is going to be one of the following:
1.  CDI box
2.  Stator
3.  A bad connection somewhere in the system

Can a person test the CDI?  How about the stator?

I hope you get some answers on testing the cdi box and stator cause I have the same question and everyone looks and nobody answers.  Its been very frustrating.  To test the engine kill switch you need a multi meter and set on ohms.  touch the wires of switch to see if it gets a 000 reading with switch on which means that the two wire are connected for power to run through them.

I'm having the same no start/weak spark problem with a 1988 Suzuki LT-4WD.  This past winter it sat at the local repair shop for 10 weeks waiting for parts and a rebuilt stator.  I had already replaced many other parts including the coil.  When I took the bike in, they insisted on checking the wiring first, and said it was fine.  So, a rebuilt stator was installed including quite a few gaskets.  The bill was almost $800 which included 4 new tires.  I plowed my driveway about 5 times, and brought firewood to my deck probably 5 times.  It ran like a top!  Then, about 3 weeks ago, it wouldn't start again.  I checked, again, it had NO SPARK!  UGH!  I borrowed a truck and had to push it to load it.  When I got to the repair shop, it started right up.  Today, they called and said they cannot get it to start and wanted to see what I wanted to do.  He said the bill was already up to $179!!!!! But I already paid for that testing of the wires the first time, didn't I??!  Obviously, I paid for a rebuild on the stator and gaskets too for no reason.  It must have been fine, and the problem is in the wiring somewhere.   How come they can't find it?

I've got so much invested in this ATV now, that I have to keep going, but I'll have to find the problem myself.  I'll get the bike back home soon.  I hope I can talk them out of this last $179 charge, seeing how I already paid for the wiring check.

(This ATV has never been abused, and I have owned it since it was brand new.  It is in excellent condition, except for the electrical problem.)

Can anyone shed some light on this no spark condition?

Thanks,
Jackie

Ok, I'm a total newbie here.  I'm trying to fix a friends 4wheeler, or at least be able to tell him if he needs a mechanic.  I can hear the solanoid (sp?) clicking, but it doesn't even try to crank.

His son in law jiggled a black wire, eureka, it started.  It started for several months after that.  Now, I'm visiting and wanted to ride the four wheeler, and I was able to adjust the wire and cranked for me, but only once.  I rode it around the yard and thought I had fixed it till it wouldn't crank the next time I tried.

I'm ignorant on the lingo being used here like 'stator,' and 'CDI' Box.  Am I havin the same issue?

Find out where the black wire is connected and remove the connector and clean it with contact cleaner. Check the wire for a short with a multi meter.

Where is this wire?
