1993 Yamaha Moto 4 Stalls when put in gear

HELP!!!! After draining gas tank, replacing with new fuel,finally got it to crank and idle. BUT now when I put it in 1st gear in lunges forward and stalls when I press on gas and then dies. Back fires also.. Please help if you can.

How long was this machine sitting before you drained the tank and put fresh fuel in the tank?? sound like the stalling problem could be that the jets of the carburetor could be clogged.
