I have a 2006 polaris sportsman 500 EFI
my speedo does work ,infact everything else is in good woorking order but when this problem occured the battery light flashed other than that first starting in the morning the starter will click a few times brfore turning over starter our polaris dealer never encountered this particular problem yet.
~~~What could be the problem?
does your rpm reading go up to a certain point and start dropping as you continue to accelerate.
We have seen similar ploblems with the 500's. what we have found the problem to be is the flywheel. they will get small cracks in them that are not visible to the eye and as the motor spins at high rpm the cracks will spread and cause charging failures, wich causes your battery light to come up or flash,but the bad thing is that its not something you can check. The only way to test it is to replace the flywheel, but if it dont work you need to make sure you have the option to send it back. We have seen quite a few come in with this problem. flywheels are around $300 so if you do it make sure you can send it back if it dont work.
I couldnt tell you the answer to that there is a few people who havnt done anything about it and i havnt seen them back yet but thats not saying it isnt going to hurt anything. Ill check the books tomorrow and talk to my other techs and see what they think and get back to you.
before you start looking anymore here is a brief history
my daugther took my atv for the night to go for ride
before she got to where she was going let her hand of the throttle and the bike cut off,i suspect since the cable has being freezing it may have stretch a little bit and now i need to adjust the free play.when she started the bike again there was no rpm signal at all,there has been none since not even any intermitting signal.today i went into the special EFI diagnostic mode and code 51 blink out telling me there is Injector 1: short to ciruit to battery. is it possible that i have a broken wire some where , what is injector 1
