i have a 1998 honda 400  foreman 4x4 and the electric start doesn't work. when i push the button all i hear is a clicking noise from under the seat.the battery is good,maybe a bad sylinoid?the electric start used to work if i pulled the pull start a little, then i would push the button and it would fire up .any help would be great. thanks

The solenoid could be bad and would cause the clicking noise u hear but with u pulling on the pull start a little then it starting, thats a flywheel. The teeth on it that engage the starter are either worn in some spots or missing. I would check flywheel first before u invest in a solenoid.

well i took off my starter and took it apart and there was alot of black dust in there and some broken pieces in there along with a broken wire. so i put a new starter on and it works great

yeah sounds like the brushes are worn out.

you could possible purchase a rebuild kit for the starter and have a back up in the future, it should have the plastic shim retainer for the brushes as well.

that way you would have an inexpensive replacement.  
Keep it RUBBER SIDE DOWN!!
