Hi folks I'm new here! I'm sure I'll learn alot judging by the topics I've read. I've done brakes, CV joint, front hubs, drive belt, sprockets (chain drive) but lack in experience with engine problems. I have a '96 400 Polaris 2 stroke. It backfired, couldn't get it started. It's in my garage, removed most of the plastic looking for obvious problems. I have good spark, fuel supply is good, compression is OK. I discovered gas in the exhaust. What caused this? What repairs am I looking at? Is there a repair manual availble for my exact machine? Model # 1341182, engine # 9670562, frame # 96-08182. I lack in experience doing repairs, but I'd like to learn more. Trouble shooting a problem?? I have the Clymer manual, but, it is not for a 400 2 stroke. Thanx for your help

Thanx for your reply. I'm off work today. I'm going to check this out (spark). While I'm at it I'm going to also perform a bit of preventative maintenance. Thoroughly clean gas tank, lines, carburetor. Also while all plastic is removed I'm going to flush the cooling system, degrease the frame, engine, transmission, oil tank (oil injected) etc. There is a fair bit of dust/sand in & around the electrical panel. I want to clean up this area as well. After this is complete I'm going to mount the tank, put in premium grade gas & hopefully hear vroom vroom!! Is there an aerosol spray that I could use on the electrical panel without damaging fuses, wires, connections??

Thanx for the advice about using contact cleaner. A friend has suggested the timing may be off - is the reason my ATV won't start. Perhaps the key that holds the stator?? (or is it the flywheel??) in place has sheared off. I'm not too familiar with this, but willing to try. I've removed the pull starter. Now going to get a puller to remove the flywheel. Any advice what I should be looking for is greatly appreciated.

i would check with the simplest and most likely causes first.
it is possible the timing is off.
but is the atv still running good? if sdso then most likely you are not experiencing a timing issue.

No it wouldn't start at all. Since my last post I discovered the broken woodruff key, removed the flywheel put it back together. Starts & runs but can't release the throttle - it will stall. According to the manual I tried adjusting the throttle cable at the throttle control (handlebar). Unable to idle it up a bit - ran out of adjustment. I went to the carb - carb has no adjuster except to back the cable out of the top of the carb. Is this method OK? It started & idled very nicely. Took it for a test run. It stalled, wouldn't start, towed it home. By backing the throttle cable out of carb am I flooding it? Could I shorten the throttle cable at the handlebar? Also fouling the plug prematurely due to too much oil from the oil injection system. How do I regulate the the oil flow? Should I disconnect the injection system & premix my gas? Thanx for all advice Brian

you could be flooding it.
is it cutting out when you ride or bogging down? it could be that the fuel/air mixture needs to be adjusted.

Still working on my 400 Polaris. It's flooding as previous post. Removed carb this AM. At the bowl there is a small nipple where a hose is supposed to be connected??? I can't find the hose. What component should this nipple at the bowl be connected?? Or, this nipple should be plugged. The nipple is clean as though something was connected to it. Thanx for advice Brian

Thanx for the replies to my problems with Polaris 400. Last night I removed the carb, thoroughly cleaned it, carb cleaner, small wire to remove debris from jets etc. Installed the carb this AM - VROOM, VROOM - a little idle adjusting; she sounds good. Took it for several test rides today. I don't want to get too optimistic but it is running better than in the last 2 years. Going fishing tomorrow. Thanx all!!! Brian
