how often should this be changed? when will I know it needs to be changed?

And how hard is it too change???

It should have a interval for inspection and replacement in the manual.  Check you tube for video on it.  It's quite easy.  I changed mine with almost 600 miles on it.  Notice the belt was slipping.  Hesitated when starting on, almost jumpy.
