well depends on just how much horsepower you are looking for. if you are just trying to break in and want something simple and easy grab an old banshee or blaster, if you want something with a little power grab yz 450.
if it's more the untility end of it, look into the rancher or rubicon.
and welcome!!! with atv riding one more is always welcome!

i personly wouldnt start with a banshee or blaster! but thats just me. with those two being 2 strokes they tend to require more work and attention. I have owned both and drag raced banshee's for 5 years and i still was constantly workin on my quad. Plus, banshee's are really torquey and dont have much low end unless they are built for that, so they tend to die alot in the trails. I think a good bike to start on would be any of the 400's. They are a good solid 4 stoke with some power and easy to handle. Great for trails when just gettin started.

The banshee's i have had never died on the trail with me. and the blasters i have have been great machines and hardly any problems other than replacing an air filter or brakes pads. (normal maintenance. i have two blasters a 1993 and my sons' 1998.
they have always been great machines to ride and were designed to handle trails well. they have 7.9 inches of travel on the suspension, and are very stable with tons of Torque.
i weigh in at 168 pounds and they drag me around with the greatest of ease and are lightweight (324 pounds dry weight) and are very controllable on the trail.
and i just smoked my friends ltz400 with mine...well until we changed the rear sprocket on his, now he keeps up with me but simply cannot outrun me.

Let me just foreworn you to stick with the major brands:
Kawasaki, Polaris, Honda, Yamaha, Arctic Cat, Suzuki, Kymco, etc. Please do yourself a favor and stay away from the off-brand ATV's. They are a nightmare. If you don't believe me, look through these forums. Also, you need to specify if you'd like to go towards a utility or sport model. Hopefully we can help you from there. Happy hunting bro!
