I know it has probably been discussed before ,but I searched and couldn't find any info. Was wondering how complicated it is to replace the drive belt on 700 sportsman. I noticed mine has started to slip some if I try to pull off in high while it is in a tight spot under a load.I am assuming it is the belt I have actually seen a little smoke and smelled rubber smell if I really strain it. This the first belt driven bike I have owned.

to replace the belt is actually quite easy.

remove the pvt clutch  cover,
once you have it off the belt will come off easily as it is loose until the engine turns.
but if your belt is slipping also check the motor mounts make sure you don have one broken allowing the engine to move and cause slack in the belt while riding.
also check the transmission fluid it would be a good time to drain and replace it.

Wolf1 cool that work out fine.(Thank You) My Polaris service book keeps referring to a Polaris tool. I did the belt today but that wasn't my issue the belt was old and we hear a slapping noise when on the machine and if you touched the cover you could feel it plus it would change the sound of the noise so I thought it was the belt but the new belt on and but it in gear and race it up and no noise so I thought we had it. Let the machine back down and she got on it to take it for a spin and there that noise any ideals

yeah the motor mounts are weak, sounds as if you have one allowing the engine to move thus the clutch gets close to the clutch cover.

check your mounts and see if the engine is moved at all. it only take 1/2 inch for the pvt clutch to get into the cover.

also check the mounting bolts for the cover make sure the cover isn't sagging.  this will cause it to do this as well.

you can probably pull up on the cover while it is making this noise and it will either get worse or stop, but if you let go of the cover it starts again.

Wolf1 I've check all motor mounts and they all look good if i try to move the motor at all it wigles the machine. I check the cross messure from center to center and it at 10inc I've takeing a steraight edge from top of clutch to top of clutch and the push down on the belt I was told that i should have a 1 1/8th their i have almost 2in but not sure on how hard I should be pushing down on the belt. The belt cover was tight and I don't see any sign of sag in the cover. Were can I go from here
