I have a 97 500, same problem? just wanted to no if you figured it out? If I'm plowing snow, it is two wheel, but, after a half hour it starts to work. If I put it back in garage for a little bit you get to start over. Let me know if you figure it out. If I find something out I will pass it on.

Have seen this happen before. I would say that your speedometer is bad. Does the reverse overide switch work when pushed? If not then I would say you will have to replace the speedo.
My 99 did the same thing back a few years ago, replaced speedo and everything was fine.

Sorry was out of town. yes, the override works. doe's all of the wiring run to the speedo? This machine has 1200 mile on it. Its like new. The guy I got it from had it up north and did not use it very often.

I have a 99 sportsman and have gone through 2 speedometers. The AWD is electronically activated through the speedometer, so if the speedo doesn't work the AWD won't either. I just wonder if there is problem with wiring that causes these years to fry speedomters. After the second one blew I tried to bypass the speedometer to no avail. If anyone has any ideas that would be great

O.K, but why do you think that after I drive it. It starts to work? Could this be also do to the speedo?

My magnum 500 did the same thing, turned out it was a cage bearing in the transfer case with broke in two. This is a 500 job if this is the case, the 4 wheel will not work. If you have an indicator light on when you switch to all wheel, and the four wheel don't work then its more then likely internal problems within transfer case.
