I am in the process of removing the carb on my 500 sportsman.I can't find a tool in my box that will fit on the hub for the choke cable. Is a special tool required to remove the choke cable from the carb?

not that iam aware of. normally you have a nut with the cable running through it.

or an anchor with a screw holding it down.

i can't recall the polaris setup but i think it's the same.

once you have the cable loose it should slide out of the carburetor.  if it doesn't then it is nasty down in there. use some penetrating oil and work gently with it.

I tried running the nut out at the end of the cable, it seperated from the hub at the carb, but would not come out. I looked at the axploded view of the carb,& it looks like that hub needs to come out of the carb to allow cable end, spring,& slide to come out. I can get a wrench on the hub, but there's no room to turn it.

the nut comes off, and the cable goes through it and then attaches to a plunger (the choke)
if the carb is gummed up th choke will get stuck in there.
see if you can get the cable to release from the plunger so that you can see down into the hole.

you should see the plunger and carefully work it out of the hole with a small flat screwdriver or a small pair of needle nose pliers.

the plunger just slides up and down with notning to lock it into the hole.

Thanks wolf, I'll try that tomorrow morning. My main concern was that I was going to break something in the choke assembly,or damage the cable,& end up replacing more parts than necesary.I'm pretty new to the whole intrnet thing, but I must say, this site is great!Happy Easter everybody!!

be careful that you don't break the choke cable.

i have seen the plungers get pretty well glued in there with crud.

normally spraying some pentrating fluid in there and gently working with it will release it.

but if you can take the cable off and work only with the plunger, just don't scar the inside of the choke chamber or mess up the threads for the nut.
