Polaris scrambler/sportsmen trouble?

Here's the deal. My buddy bought a rigged 2000 Polaris scrambler 500, with a 2005 Polaris sportsman 500 motor shoved in it. The guy said it ran great then he let it sit for 2 weeks and now it wont start. He said it's the ignition coil. Replaced that, still wont start.
Here's my question/s.
They used the wiring harness and coil, everything from the scrambler to hook up the sportsmam motor. Is the coil the same between a 2000 scrambler and an 05 sportman?

It has spark but only here and there, not consistent. But it seems to be a strong blue spark, just here and there. It wont even attempt to start.  Could it be the magneto or whatever, or out of time?  Thanks alot for any suggestions or help.,
sorry about the long post.

well the magneto and stator are timed by the steel key pin in the crankshaft.

I am thinking the stator is the same, don't have my books with me right now..

have you checked the carburetor for dirt?

it couldbe the carburetor is clogged up.

intermittent spark make me think that the stator is improperly installed as well.
check the mounting screws for the stator, also check the stator contacts and the magneto contacts for rust or dirt.

polaris has the bad habit of designing the stator and magneto cover so that water and dirt gets in there.

bad design and they are aware of it but still design them that way.

Yeah. Ill check them when I see him again. But still, are the coil's the same. He bought a coil for the 05 sportsman and then 1 for the 2000 scrambler. He said they were completly different. But yet it supposedly ran with the scrambler coil. Again, they used the scrambler wiring harness and all that. Im mechanically inclined somwhat and usaully do his minor work for him. But that has me wondering? did they even install this motor and wire it correctly. The lights work, not sure about the 4 wheel or anything. thanks for the suggestions.

We'll the coils can be different for some years.

but they are both coils for a 500cc
so either can be made to work as long as they are in good working order, and are wired right.

check to be sure that the coil is grounded well.

both on any ground wires as well as where they bolt to the frame
