I have a 97 kingquad LT-F4WDX that will idle but can't make it rev up any at all. or I can reset the float level too high and the it will rev but won't idle. When it is set up to idle the float level is set right on what the book says. It has a new cdi,I have replaced the coil as well. Fuel pump is all good (have taken it apart and checked)and provides a nice flow. Sometimes when I first start it, it will idle and rev for about 45 sec. then starts missing like it is starving for fuel, but will do same thing with a gravity flow fuel tank mounted very high on the quad rack. Also the fuel pump never seems to miss a beat(lots of fuel flow) while gravity tank is in use. Most of the time when it starts missing all I have to do is shut it off and then restart then it will run about 30 sec. before starting this again. I will continually get worse until it won't rev at all then let it set for a few minutes and it starts all over again. I am at my wits end on this thing. Help Help

I just had a similar problem that drove me nuts. I finally found that the diaphragm on the slide (located underneath the top cover of the carb) had a little tear in it and was causing all my heartache. Have you checked that?

definately a carb issue, check the diaphram in the top as homecutt suggested, and make sure the carb is clean as well.

Thanks guys for your response. I have cleaned the carb reset the float a jillion times, I have looked at the diaphram, it doesnt appear to have any holes, but I will pull it out and check it again, I had another guy say the same thing, that he had one that was leaking around the center where the needle attaches. Got that info late last nite. and now yours this am. Will check very close and maybe grease around the center, can't hurt at this point. Thanks again

Ok I pulled the diaphram out and even seperated it from the slide, cleaned some hard corosion from the rubber and all the metal parts, put vasaline (thin coat)on all mating surfaces, and still won't rev, I let it idle until it was warmed up(couldn't hold my hand on the motor), it acted like it wanted to start to rev then cut out again and backfired. Died will restart but same result every time.

you had corossion on the rubber?
that's a good sign that the carb is clogged. did you check all of the jets to be sure they weren't clogged?
You can use a wire bread tie to run through them to unclog them.
check the intake boot and make sure there are no holes or cracks in them causing an air leak.
easy way to check this is to use starting fluid. crank the engine let it idle and spray the intake boot see if the idle changes at all, stumbling or revving.
also spray it around the head and cylinder gaskets see if they are leaking.

I think you have a bad stator runs great when cold but as the stator heats up it runs worse and worse yes same problem I and it drove me nuts for 3 months.I even rebuilt my entire motor and still same proble.yep replace the stator and it should cure the problem.

while in rare cases the stator can cause this, clean the carb, do the repairs that wont cost you anything but time, first.
You'd hate to buy a stator and find your carburetor just needed cleaning out.
