My son bought a chinese TAOTAO 110 last July and rode all summer with no issues. Now we can't get it started. It turns over, the battery is fully charged, there is spark on the plug and there isn't a tethered kill strap on this one.I sprayed starting fluid into breather and it would start just for a second, any suggestions? Also, where can i get a maintenance manual along with a location to order parts.

a maintenance or service manual is not available on these.

it sounds like your carburetor is clogged.

take it off, there should be two bolts holding it on.

remove the four screws on the bowl on the bottom and clean it out really well.

you can use a wire bread tie with the coating burned off to run through the jets.

My wife and I just bought a couple of TaoTao 250cc ATA ATV's. After clutch adjustments, throttle adjustments, kill switch removal(1 was broken), oil change, all nut and bolt checks and wheel alignments I'm ready to do some serious damage. What spark plug goes in these engines and what is the valve clearances?? I read somewhere that the valves are both .004  Is this right? Also, is there anything special about the carbs before I tear into them for cleaning?? I have a mechanical background and have worked on many engines before so no worries there...
Thanks in advance for any help........

valve setting are .004 intake .006 exhaust.

how to keep the chain on, this is a aligment problem the front spocket doesn't align with the rear spocket, you need to use the rear chain adjusters to align both spockets up, look at where the chain is riding in the rear spocket, it should ride pretty much in the center of the chain and adjust acordingly.

i have seen tons of these at my shop for broken motor mounts in the rear.

the weld starts pulling loose.

also most of the chinese atv's i have seen have been thrown together at best at the dealer, with no real care in making sure the many bolts are actually torqued down.

so check the motor mount bolts, make sure they are tight. also check all of the swingarm bolts and a-arm bolts too.

don't let this chinese atv steal your riding fun.

sell it and go buy you a good used yamaha or honda.  you'll see  with yamaha and honda you don't have to work on them all the time.
plus a good used yamaha or honda will last you alot longer than the chinese atv's.

the carbs are pretty straight forward.
nothing super in the design, they are a basic design based on early 80's mikuni's
just make sure you get the carb cap on top tight.  these have a bad habit of rattling loose while riding.
it if comes off while riding it goes to full throttle suddenly.
you may want to use some light thread locker.

with the 250's the chain should have a maximum of 3/4 inch in play.

on 110cc atv's it should have a maximum of 1/2 inch of play.

but do check the rear motor mounts. these atv's are constructed out of thin guage steel tubing, which is really bad about breaking out at the motor mount at the weld.

also check the motor mount bolts to be sure they are tight.

if iam correct the valves should be .004 and .006
however there is no service manual for these so you have to rough guess in most cases.  go a little large and and tighten it back until you get it just right.

Are you fimiliar with Alpine ATV's (Chinese). I just purchased an Alpine 90cc for my daughter as her first atv. So far so good, but she only rode it twice. I purchased it from a Jet Moto dealer here in Alaska, and paid $899.00 (AK shipping My question is. Do you consider Alpine a decient quality ATV or at least 60% of a honda? Im buying my other daughter one as well and am courious if I should look into other Chinese brands. Thanks for any help.

My 13 yr old bought a 125 tao tao in December and from day 1 we have had problems with it.The first day it wouldn't even start .We had to take it back he had it for 2 weeks. The chain kept falling off until it finally snapped into, replace the battery cause it wouldn't stay charged. The lights and tail light wouldn't stay on,had to replace the wiring harness, one of the tires blew up .And to top all of that he started down the road and it started shaking so he brought it back to the house.the a frame had a weld broke away from it and on the other side the whole pipe was split all the way around. The dealer wants to replace the a frame .I told him it would have been reaaly hard to replace an injured child if he would have been going fast and wrecked.I do not feel anyone should put their children on chinese knock offs. They also said no one has ever complained of these things which I find hard to believe.

That’s the kind of stories I’m afraid of. Its my understanding that their are several manufactures that make the same ATV, but the quality  of each manufacture is very different some decent, and others are terrible. Jet Moto is one that I’ve heard good things about so I went with the alpine 90cc which is being distributed by jet moto. I have found several atv's on the internet that look identical to mine with brand names such as Roketa, Sunl, Top tom, Tao Tao and the list goes on and on. Some of these brands I’ve read terrible stories about. Does anyone know if there is a difference between these brands or are they the same mini quad with a different name? Thanks guys
