My 1989 KSF 250 has water in cylinder

1989 KSF 250 is getting water in the cylinder. Not sure where to start looking for problem. Head gasket maybe? It runs good with no water, when I put water in it smokes and water drips from tailpipe, I pulled the spark plug and kicked it over and water shot into the air in a stream. Any suggestions, I'm new to the sport.
