Hey guys how you doing? my name is jeff and im starting to get into atvs i used to ride them a lot, then went to 2 wheels for the longest time, but im going to sell my bike, and hopefully purchase a quad. I am thinking about getting a TRX250r  ive heard nothing but good. i know that they are an older quad, but ive seen tons of parts for them. i just wanted to get some opinions from you guys, and tell me what you know about them. would one keep up with the newer 4 strokes? ie. honda trx450, yfz450? any feedback would be appreciated

Good question about a great quad. There is no doubt the 250R is a great quad. Your question seems to be could it 'keep up' with the newer 'race' quads. trx450, yfz450 for example. Depending on the condition of the 250R and where you are  to riding and who is riding, I'm sure a 250R could keep up with the new 450's.

My question to you is why would you want to buy a 17 or so year old quad when the new ones are so good?

I have found several 250r's that are much cheaper, than the newer 450's. Ballpark 2500-3500 dollars. I have looked at these quads myself, and they are in very good condition. I can't afford to go with the newer 4 strokes otherwise I would. Especially the new quadracer.

The price of those machines have really come down. It didn't seam like too long ago they were asking big ***

I seem to remember reading somewhere on what to look for in buying a used 250R,the last two years were better than the first two. Watch for cracked/ repaired frames around the swingarm. I'd also find one with a lot of good aftermarket parts. In that price range I'd say go for it. I'll bet you could ride one for several years, and still get your money back!

The big advantage to the 250R is they've been around, unchanged for nearly 20 years. That equals a lot of aftermarket options. Some guys still swear by them, but they are old and you'll need use the standard used-ATV caution when buying one.

Personally, I'd save and buy a newer 04+ 450 unless you're just a die-hard 2-stroke man.
