I have a 97 timberwolf that is smoking (blue). It starts fine, rev's fine, has 110 lbs. compression. This started all of a sudden while out riding the trails. I mean lots of smoke hard to see the trail when behind it type of smoke. Question?? Is there something that would make it do this besides the rings (oil) or am I going to have to tear it down and re-ring it?? Thanks for any info or ideas.

ok iam guessing that you're timberwolf is a 4 cycle. being that a 2 cycle smokes because the oil and fuel mix together.
have to rolled the fourwheeler over on it's top?
have you added oil to the crankcase recently? if so it may be overfull and will smoke because the extra oil has to go somewhere, and it will end up in the cylinder and get burned with the fuel.
it sounds like you are burning quite alot of oil.
also you could have a bad valve or valve sgtem seal which will allow too much oil to enter the combustion chamber. and with it being a 4 cycle and if memory serves me right the timberwolf is a Yamaha. Most of the yamaha 4cycle engines i have owned be it street bike or offroad, did have issues with the valves eventually. admittedly i haven't ridden any of the newer yamaha 4cycle engines for years. (because of the valve problems they've had in the past.)
anyrate it would do well to check the valves and seals

hey check with your dealer, i don't know what the compression should be for the timberwolf 4cycle. ( i think the timberwolf is a 250cc. ?)
anyrate, for a 250cc 2 cycle engine the compression should be between 120 and 140 psi. they will still run at 110 psi and you wont notice much of a difference but without electric start they are very hard to start, they have a small amount of decrease in horsepower (not very noticeable) and eventually will burn the rings out all together and not run. so it is possible that you have too little compression due to worn rings.

Yes, it is a 4 cycle and it has gone thru long periods where it has sat for 3or 4 months at a time without being started. So valve seals make sense to me. Also it started smoking while out riding, and wasn't smoking at the beginning of the ride. Thanks for the input. I will do some more research with the dealer on compression and then make a decision.

My timberwolf repair book calls for 130PSI. Looks like you might have a cracked ring or one of them got hung up. If one of the rings got hung up you might be able to free it with 1oz of solvent in the cylinder (marvel mystery oil or ATF fluid) and cranking it over with the spark plug out a few times over a couple of days. Then a full oil change. Valve seals smoke at startup then clear up.

if he is only getting 110 psi compression the he has cracked a ring or burned them out. if it was stuck it shouldn't start.
most important thing is to change them quick before the bad rings can scarr the cylinder causing you to have it bored out.
