Dies at high speed

My friend has a 1999 300 King Quad, runs good at low speed and has plenty of grunt, but at faster speeds (35mph @ up) it simply dies. Let it sit a minute and it fires right up and runs for a while only to die again sometime down the road.
Anyone else had this problem, he says it's done it since it was new and the shop couldn't figure it out(imagine that)
